Toby's Story

Toby was 7 months old, but could not sit up or turn over by himself. Something was wrong. Fortunately, Toby’s mother came to the Partnership for Families for help and guidance, and he was soon enrolled on a Partnership scholarship with our partner, the VCU-Health System Child Care Center.

Toby was developmentally delayed in other ways too – he did not socially interact through smiles or eye contact with anyone. After only two months he was making significant progress. The occupational and developmental therapy Toby was receiving, as well as the enriching environment of quality child care, started paying off in ways that everyone could see.

Today, Toby no longer needs to receive the therapeutic support, and is developmentally on par with his peers. Toby recently “graduated” from the VCU-HS Child Care Center, was enrolled in Head Start, and is learning and thriving. His family is proud of Toby, and so are we. Toby is a prime example of how important early childhood intervention can be in preparing children to enter school on time and ready to learn.

Toby can now make the most of the education that stretches out ahead of him, thanks in part to the services he received from the Partnership for Families and our partners. There is no one organization that addresses the breadth and depth of a family’s needs. That’s where the Partnership comes in, bringing varied programs and services together to solve problems, one family at a time.
